North American Muslim Powwow

The Powwow was an event that brought together Muslims of diverse backgrounds to know one another, to increase trust among us, and to discover our common voice. 'Powwow' is a native Algonquin word, and we use it to indicate our desire for Islam to become native to the American Continent. The word expresses the intention of this gathering, as a conference, a council meeting, a caucus, a time to hear each other out.

The Powwow gatherings started out in 1993 as a grassroots 3 day camping event bringing Muslims together in a spirit of celebration and knowledge-based respect & harmony.

That underlying theme set the expansive tone for the following three annual gatherings. The need for 'knowledge-based Islam' in America became the driving force behind the transformative study & worship circles which have now formalized into the Deen Intensives, and have spread to different places in North America and as far as England.

Currently the Powwow is dormant until a crucial and urgent issue among the North American Muslim Community engages people to manifest it again, insha'Llah.
